Thanks in finance.....

Is external HDD be use to store OS?

If your motherboard is capable of booting from a USB device the you should know how to install windows onto the external complex drive although I am not sure if windows installer will see the external concrete drive during the install. If the installer does see the external and you are able to install onto it, window will not be portable due to the fact that during the install window becomes hardware specific, it configures itself to the hardware on which it is installed so it would not be portable.

If you would approaching to install windows onto the external and the installer does not see the external, you can use a program similar to Norton Ghost to transfer an imitation of your internal hard drive to the external.
Yup guy. You can surely do it.

But it will not be read as an OS from USB.

Instead it will be read as external BAckup device
step into your bios and check what boot devices are available.

I'm not sure how many computers can boot from USB since they are special drivers that call for to be installed.

but you bios will tell you

usually bios is at f5 when you boot, but plentiful computers are different and may use f8 or f12 or f2
good idea to buy a rental car
